The renovation of the historic Whipple Hall involved improvements to the building enclosure, mechanical systems, and finishes.

Old noisy cabinet unit heaters were removed and replaced with new silent Runtal panel radiators connected to an existing heating system. New Mitsubishi air source heat pumps supplement the Runtal panel radiators with efficient electric heating and provide the space with summer air conditioning. Two new high-efficiency energy recovery ventilators provide the hall with mechanical ventilation for public gatherings with automatic controls that only run them when needed.

  • Air source heat pump outdoor units that provide the hall with air conditioning and efficient electric heating. The location is carefully chosen to be least disruptive to historic elevations.

  • Heat pump and ERV supply grilles are inconspicuously located above exit doors (left). Runtal panel radiators blend-in with historic finishes.

  • Runtal panel radiators were carefully selected to fit symmetrically within the historic trim and molding to preserve historic finishes and blend-in aesthetically.

  • Identical air source heat pump fancoil units and energy recovery ventilators are symmetrically located in small attic spaces on each side of the performance stage.
